Handmade Slides: Full Slide Textures

October 22, 2012

Handmade Slides: Full Slide Textures

These full screen textured pictures cover the entire slide area and are not meant to be seamless, tiling, or repeating. These organic pictures have been made available in both 4:3 (standard) and 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratios. Just add them to individual slides as required, or even better -- add them to the Slide Master. Typically, any picture you add has no transparency in PowerPoint but that omission is easily rectified by adding the picture as a fill for a large rectangle that covers the entire slide.

Download and use these textures to make your slides.

October 17, 2012

M. S. Ramgopal

Business presentations are increasingly becoming visual. Slide decks are being used more as visual aids for audiences than as memory joggers for presenters. In this article, we explore the specific roles played by two common visual tools -viz. stock photos and diagrams in business presentations. Even though the terms "photos" and "diagrams" are quite common, the difference between the two tools is not clearly defined. So, let us take a minute to spell out the difference as we see it.

Changing Bullet Styles in PowerPoint 2011 for Mac

In spite of the repeated cries about how bullets can cause "death by PowerPoint", bulleted paragraphs are still being used in PowerPoint. We won't go into whether or not you should use bulleted paragraphs in your slides -- suffice to say that too much of anything cannot be good! However most PowerPoint slide layouts are already set up with placeholders for bulleted lists (or paragraphs), so that when you start typing into a text placeholder, your text is automatically bulleted. Sometimes making some changes to the appearance of your bullets can make a difference. We show how you can change the bullet styles for your text placeholders (or text boxes) in PowerPoint 2011.

Learn PowerPoint 2010 for Windows: Texture Fill for Text

Although you can fill text with a texture in PowerPoint, the appearance of the text depends upon the texture you use, and how well it contrasts with the slide background. For reasons of readability, make sure that the texture used is not too crowded or even multicolored -- and as already stated, choose a texture that contrasts with your slide background.

Slides and Speakers: by Tom Mucciolo

October 15, 2012

Tom Mucciolo

The challenge in presentations is when the design task is separate from the delivery, making collaboration more critical. As we entered the new millennium, companies began to focus on consistency in presentations, especially for global organizations serving global markets. In fact, it was becoming increasingly clear that audiences wanted a cohesive blend of design and delivery to support a well-developed message. Too often, when the presenters of content were neither the designers of the slides, nor the developers of the underlying message, the result was an inconsistency that audiences could recognize. The lack of collaboration among creative minds creates a marketing nightmare for so many organizations who seek uniformity across media formats. The most typical example is a presentation designed by a marketing department for use by a remote sales force. The tendency is to produce wordy, busy support content to assist even the "least experienced" presenter. In turn, presenters typically "narrate" the abundant content so as to cover everything, leaving little time for stories, examples, analogies and interaction.

Learn PowerPoint 2011 for Mac: Character Spacing

Learn PowerPoint 2011 for Mac: Character Spacing

When you increase or decrease the font size of text in PowerPoint, you'll discover that not only does this make a difference in the aesthetics of your slide, but the text itself uses more or less space than you may want. Sometimes, you may want the text to take just a wee bit lesser space so that all content can fit within two lines rather than three. If you want to alter the spacing between text characters, you can do so by using PowerPoint 2011's Character Spacing option that influences the appearance and readability of both Title and Body text. Character Spacing is the amount of space in-between individual letters.

Kristin Thompson at the Presentation Summit 2012

October 13, 2012

Kristin Thompson

After a photo session showing the events of the past three days, Rick handed over to Kristin Thompson, the keynote speaker for Wednesday morning. Kristin, who is based out of Portland, Oregon did a session that discusses memory power, and how it can help you get ahead in your life and career. She explained that memory as a skill is not typically something inherited by your genes, but developed using techniques. Kristin added that it's important that you remember your talk when you have to do a presentation. If you are worried about remembering your talk, or speak in the wrong order -- then you lose your confidence even before you begin your presentation.

PowerPoint Concept Slides: Segment Heptagon

As the name indicates, this Segment Heptagon graphic contains 7 equal segments. This concept slide is a part of our Segment Polygons series, which provides various segmented polygons that can enhance the impact of your presentations. This Segment Heptagon graphic can be used to illustrate a “seven-in-one” concept as in seven days of the week – or even a “one-for-seven” theme. In the example slide, we have used colorful pictures to fill all seven segments of the heptagon – try and use pictures that have a common theme to go well with your slide’s message. In this Segment Heptagon graphic, each individual segment is a separate triangle shape, and can be edited as required using PowerPoint’s shape editing options.

Office Themes: XML Editing in Visual Studio

All the new Office file formats (post Office 2007) are XML based -- and can easily be opened and edited in an XML editing program. We already showed you how all these files are a bunch of XML files contained in a ZIP file container within our Theme XML Files tutorial. Although it is easy to unzip the files and edit some code in a basic program like Notepad, you will need a better program that does not require you to unzip and edit all the time, and then zip it up again! Thankfully there are plenty of programs that allow you to edit these Office XML files -- our favorite is Microsoft's own Visual Studio. On its own, Visual Studio cannot open and edit Office XML files -- but Microsoft provides a free add-in that plugs into Visual Studio and lets you edit the Office XML files.

Pictures in Presentations

Is a picture is worth a thousand words? You probably have heard this adage so often that we decided not to repeat this phrase throughout this book! Now here’s some more info: the human brain uses a larger part of its area to store visual information rather than textual content. And that’s possibly because a picture describes so much more than text.
