You have already learned the differences between text placeholders and text boxes within PowerPoint 2011. Beyond those differences, almost everything else does work in the same way as far as formatting for text placeholders and text boxes is concerned. However, there is one more vital difference between a text placeholder and a text box: You never insert a text placeholder on a slide since they are part of the layout for your slide. Text boxes on the other hand need to be inserted manually.

The main purpose of adding animation to any slide object is to draw the attention of the audience to some movement. Once you set an animation event, and set the speed of the animation, you may also want some sound to play along with the animation -- one aspect that you should always remember is that although you can add sound to an animation, it is not always necessary to do so -- we suggest you only add sound sparingly -- and even then, you must make sure that the sound adds some value to the animation. In addition, it is important that you use the perfect sound type for any animation -- using clapping or blasting sounds is very cliché.

Adding text within any shape in PowerPoint 2011 is easy -- do remember though that a few shapes such as Lines won't allow you to add text. Select your inserted shape, and start typing. Anything you type shows up within the shape -- remember that almost any shape in PowerPoint is essentially also a text box.

Animation is a fine art that lets you illustrate a concept using movement. However there's a thin dividing line between mere movement and utter confusion. Imagine a classroom where a teacher moves around the room explaining a concept -- as he or she moves, the eye of the students follows him or her. There is a clear focus in the room, and the subject of that focus is the teacher. Now imagine another situation where the teacher and all the students in the room start moving in disparate directions just for the sake of movement -- at this point of time, the movement has given way to chaos. The distinction between movement and chaos works similarly on PowerPoint slides -- at any point of time, movement needs to have focus and direction, and more importantly, a reason to move!

PowerPoint follows the process of selection, then action for any slide object on a slide. If you cannot select an object, then you cannot do anything to modify it in any way. Although this tutorial explains how you can select shapes on a slide, the process works the same way for any other slide object.

Many PowerPoint designers, especially template designers need some dummy text to quickly add to their slides so that they can ascertain how some body of text looks or fits within a certain text box or placeholder. Microsoft introduced an undocumented feature in PowerPoint 2010 that lets you achieve this with just a few keystrokes, and once you are used to these shortcuts, you'll learn to appreciate them so much!

You already learned how to show the Advanced Timeline for Custom Animation within PowerPoint 2007. The main advantage of using the Advanced Timeline to edit your animation is that you can control the start time, duration, and end time of your animation to the most minute level. You are not limited to the time or speed presets that PowerPoint provides. For example, by using the Advanced Timeline you can animate a slide object very slowly to span over a whole minute or more by just dragging the start and end points of any animation bar outwards in the timeline.

An Indezine reader asked if he could create three circles next to each other, and make sure that they appeared in a sequence where the first circle should be filled-in with a solid color, the second circle should be half full, and the third and last circle should have no fill at all (empty). The first and third circles are easy -- all you need to do is ensure that the first circle has both the Outline and Solid Fill applied, and the third circle has only an Outline with a No Fill attribute.

There's so much you can do within the default Custom Animation task pane within PowerPoint 2007 -- you can add animation to any slide object, change the animation event as required, and set the speed of the animation spanning all the way from Very Slow to Very Fast, choosing from several preset speeds available. Yet, there may be times when you want your animation to play for a time span that exceeds the preset time for the Very Slow or any other option. Or there may be two animations that start at the same time, but you want one of them to end just two seconds before the other. In situations like these, you'll need to use the Advanced Timeline found within the Custom Animation task pane.

Pattern fills are the last of the various fill options for slide backgrounds in PowerPoint 2010. Patterns in PowerPoint are two-color designs comprising lines, dots, dashes, checks, etc. PowerPoint includes 48 such patterns with names like plaid, weaves, shingle and zigzag. After a photo slide show by Rick Altman, Wednesday morning at the Presentation Summit 2011 graduated to Nick Morgan's keynote session. Nick started his session by stating that the only reason to give any speech has to be to change the world. He discussed working on a speech for the Governor of Virginia for a decennial commemoration of the Vietnam war. During his research, Nick found a book that contained poignant letters from soldiers at war. During the actual speech, the Governor threw away his papers and read letters from the book. The last letter he read was about a lieutenant who was writing to his daughter he had never seen, and he never lived to see her. In a way, the Governor that day did something to change the world.
