All SmartArt graphic layouts have text placeholders, which are essentially text boxes. You can click and start typing within these placeholders to add text. In previous tutorials, we have shown you how to insert a SmartArt graphic within PowerPoint, how you can convert some bulleted text to SmartArt graphic, and how the SmartArt graphic Text Pane works.

There are several ways to format the SmartArt graphic text. Follow these steps to format text attributes of SmartArt graphics in PowerPoint 2010 for Windows:

  1. Select your existing SmartArt graphic, as shown in Figure 1, below.

  3. Select the Home tab on the Ribbon. Within the Font group, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 2, below, you'll see options to change the font type, font size, apply font style, change the font color, etc.

  5. Alternatively, you can select text within SmartArt graphic's Text Pane. Doing so brings up the contextual menu with the Mini Toolbar (the toolbar on the top), as shown highlighted in red within Figure 3, below.

  7. As you can see in the Figure 3, above, the Mini Toolbar contains most of the text formatting options you may require. It thus saves you from accessing the Ribbon tabs each time you want to apply some text formatting.
