Once you insert a SmartArt graphic in your slide, you can change the color for the entire SmartArt graphic. This technique applies new colors to the entire SmartArt graphic including various shapes contained within. However, there may be times when you want one of the shapes to be colored differently.
Follow these steps to explore fill, line, and effect options for individual shapes within a SmartArt graphic in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows:
- Select any individual shape within your existing SmartArt graphic, as shown in Figure 1, below. As you can see, one of the gear shapes has been selected in this case. Doing so will activate the two contextual SmartArt Tools tabs on the Ribbon. These are the SmartArt Tools Design and the SmartArt Tools Format tabs, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 1. Activate the SmartArt Tools Format tab by clicking on it.

Contextual Tabs
- The SmartArt Tools Design and SmartArt Tools Format tabs are contextual tabs. These tabs are special tabs in the Ribbon that are not visible all the time. They only make an appearance when you are working with a particular slide object which can be edited using special options.
- Within the SmartArt Tools Format tab, locate the Shape Styles group, as shown in Figure 2, below.
