After you add animation to a selected slide object, you typically set an animation event. Another animation property you can set thereafter is the speed of the animation. Every animation you add within PowerPoint 2013 for Windows has a fixed, default speed. This speed essentially is a duration shown in seconds or part thereof, and differs from animation to animation. For example, the default duration of a Fade animation is half a second (00.50) whereas for the Wheel animation, it is two seconds (02.00). Clearly this is a different approach than the behavior in previous versions of PowerPoint where you were limited to five speed presets: Very Slow (5 seconds), Slow (3 seconds), Medium (2 seconds), Fast (1 second), and Very Fast (0.5 second).

Remember that animation speed is the duration of time that a slide object animates in Slide Show view.

Follow these steps to change the animation speed (duration) for any animation in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows:

  1. Select the slide object that has an animation applied. For more information on adding animation, refer to our Adding an Animation in PowerPoint 2013 tutorial.
  2. With the slide object still selected, access the Animations tab of the Ribbon, and locate the Duration box, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 1, below.

  4. 60 Seconds, or 100 Decimal Seconds?

  5. Animations in PowerPoint 2013 are timed to decimals, rather than using the typical 60 parts. So half a second is shown as 00.50 rather than 00:00:30.
  6. Use the Up and Down arrows within the Duration box, as shown in Figure 1, above, to increase or decrease the animation speed. You can also type in the exact duration value.
  7. Thereafter, click the Preview button, within the Animations tab of the Ribbon to preview the animation speed, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 2, below.

  9. Save your presentation.
